Talkeetna is situated at the junction of 3 rivers, the Talkeetna, Susitna, and Chulitna. All three rivers merge in Talkeetna, making it an ideal fishing destination. On The Fly guides fly and spin fishermen on over 100 miles of river surrounding Talkeetna. On The Fly's guide Kelsey Kaso is one of the most experienced fishing guides in the Talkeetna area. Growing up in Talkeetna, Kelsey has fished and guided fisherman on the waters of the Susitna and Talkeetna rivers for over 20 years. Client satisfaction is his number one priority. Fishing in Talkeetna starts in April as the river ice breaks up
and ends in October when the river begins to freeze over for the
winter. Rainbow Trout and
Dolly Varden can be caught from April
through May. This time of year fishing is done with large
flies or small spinners. Rainbow Trout have just survived the
the winter and can't afford to pass up a large offering this time of
year. When a Rainbow takes you offering this time of year
there is no mistaking that a fish has just slammed your line. Trout
fishing starts up again in September when the salmon runs have waned
and they begin dropping millions of eggs into the river system.
This is the time of the year when the trout are hammering egg and
flesh imitations. They eat everything they can, trying to put
on weight for the winter.
Guided fishing trips for salmon fishing starts when the King Salmon arrive in mid June. Kings are by far the largest fish in the system. King Salmon weighing up to 60 pounds are caught in the Talkeetna or Susitna Rivers every year. On average kings in the Talkeetna area weigh in at 30 pounds. Silver Salmon, although not as large as the King Salmon are caught in greater numbers. Silvers are eager biters and will even hit large dry flies or bass poppers on the surface! If conditions are right Silver Salmon will attack a surface offering. Silver Salmon arrive in the Talkeetna area in August and are available untill September. |
